Wine tourism in Alentejo- What to visit?

23-10-2020

The knowledge and flavors of the Alentejo are unmistakable, and for that reason you cannot miss the opportunity to discover the places where quality wines are produced and which are increasingly preferred by consumers nationally and internationally.

There is a wide variety of wines in this region, predominantly Portuguese and also foreign grape varieties, such as (in reds) Aragonez, Alfrocheiro, Alicante Bouschet, Castelão, Trincadeira, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Moreto, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. In white varieties, we have Antão Vaz, Arinto, Roupeiro, Fernão Pires, Manteúd, Perrum, Rabo de Ovelha, Tamarez, Trincadeira das Pratas, Viosinho, Verdelho and Chardonnay.

This varied offer means that there are many spaces dedicated to tasting, showing and selling wines, be they wineries, restaurants or hotels. Here we show some of the places you can visit. You can do it on the way, during or after your visit to the city of Moura.

Cartuxa Winery

At Quinta de Valbom, located on the outskirts of the city of Évora, about 80km from Moura, the Enoturismo Cartuxa offers visitors the opportunity to learn about the history, the surrounding environment of the Quinta, the building where Adega was founded and taste the wines and olive oil from their production.

São Lourenço do Barrocal

Inserted in a Estate with more than 200 years of history, near Reguengos de Monsaraz, about 50 km from Moura, this Adega allows you to experience a short tour through the vineyards of the Estate and taste some of its wines. The production process is also very careful and supervised, it has the “hand” of the winemaker Susana Esteban, and you can get to know more about it. The landscapes that accompany you on this visit are unique.

Herdade do Esporão

This estate, is located about 55km from Moura, in Reguengos de Monsaraz. The variety of products, activities and services offered makes it stand out on the positive side. In the total hectares of this estate, about 40 varieties are planted, 4 varieties of olives, orchards and vegetable gardens. Here you can visit the vineyards where the grapes are planted and harvested, the two wineries that show different production processes (wine tasting), the Lagar where olive oil is produced (olive oil tasting), and you can also go on bike tours. There are special programs and even a restaurant.

Ribafreixo Wines

Herdade do Moinho Branco, which houses Ribafreixo Wines, is located in Vidigueira about 40 km from the city of Moura. It has a large territory of vineyards, mostly white grape varieties, where the Antão Vaz variety predominates. Being a recent Herdade, state-of-the-art technology is used in its Cellar to ensure better and faster production. Here you can enjoy local cuisine, enjoying a meal at Restaurante da Adega by Chef Sónia Sério, and you can also do wine tasting.
